Synopsis (Zeitgeist Films)
Next up for our virtual presentations is the latest award-winning film from master filmmaker Ken Loach - SORRY WE MISSED YOU. With many workers from the gig economy going on strike earlier this week, this film speaks directly to the headlines. "The British working class is once again the empathetic subject of Ken Loach's SORRY WE MISSED YOU, a wrenching, intimate family drama that exposes the dark side of the so-called 'gig economy.' Ricky, a former laborer, and his home-attendant wife Abby-who lost their home in the 2008 financial crash-are desperate to get out of their financial distress. When an opportunity comes up for Ricky to work as his own boss as a delivery driver, they sell their only asset, Abby's car, to trade it in for a shiny new white van and the dream that Ricky can work his way up to someday owning his own delivery franchise. But the couple find their lives are quickly pushed further to the edge by an unrelenting work schedule, a ruthless supervisor and the needs of their two teenage children. Capturing the sacred moments that make a family as well as the acts of desperation they need to undertake to make it through each day, this universal story is skillfully and indelibly told with unforgettable performances and a searing script by Loach's long-time collaborator Paul Laverty." (Unfortunately, it looks like there are issues when trying to screen this film via older versions of AppleTV. It seems that for AppleTV, you must have tvOS 9 or later.) Synopsis (Oscilloscope)
Check out a film we were planning to play in Your Home! Even though our doors are closed for the time being, we want to continue offering great cinema to you. Now you can still support us by watching SAINT FRANCES at home...and it won't be available on other platforms for a while. When you pay $10.50 for a 48-Hour Link to the film, you'll actually be helping THE NEON at the same time...and critics are calling SAINT FRANCES "Courageous," "Powerful," and "Jarringly funny." It's currently rated "98% Fresh" on Rottentomatoes.com. "Flailing thirty-four-year-old Bridget (Kelly O'Sullivan) finally catches a break when she meets a nice guy and lands a much-needed job nannying six-year-old Frances (played by a scene-stealing Ramona Edith-Williams). But an unwanted pregnancy introduces an unexpected complication. To make matters worse, she clashes with the obstinate Frances and struggles to navigate a growing tension between Frances's moms. Amidst her tempestuous personal relationships, a reluctant friendship with Frances emerges, and Bridget contends with the inevitable joys and shit-shows of becoming a part of someone else's family." Synopsis (Magnolia Pictures)
If you missed ONCE WERE BROTHER: ROBBIE ROBERTSON AND THE BAND when we had it at THE NEON a few weeks ago (I know several lovers of The Last Waltz who missed it), you can catch it virtually with us. (Or maybe you just want to watch it again...I know one customer who saw it three times.) Here's the amazing part...from now until April 2, Magnolia Pictures is giving us 100% of the net rental fee!! They're such generous partners, and we truly appreciate this offer from them. "ONCE WERE BROTHERS: ROBBIE ROBERTSON AND THE BAND is a confessional, cautionary, and occasionally humorous tale of Robertson's young life and the creation of one of the most enduring groups in the history of popular music, The Band. The film is a moving story of Robertson's personal journey, overcoming adversity and finding camaraderie alongside the four other men who would become his brothers in music, together making their mark on music history. ONCE WERE BROTHERS blends rare archival footage, photography, iconic songs and interviews with Robertson's friends and collaborators including Martin Scorsese, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, and more." $12 gets you access to the film for 72 hours...just click the "official website" link above! As of this posting (3/27/20 at 5:00pm), the distributor is having difficulty making the film work with AppleTV. They hope to have this remedied soon.

THE NEON's Board was working on a plan to temporarily close our facility in order to help "flatten the curve" of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Governor DeWine has sped up the process. Effective at the close of business on Monday, March 16, all cinemas in Ohio must close until further notice. This closure will be a challenge - financially and emotionally. We hope that all of you will return to the cinema en masse when we turn on our marquee again. THANK YOU for all of your patronage and support!
