Today marks the start of Pablo Larraín's MARIA - starring Angelina Jolie as famed opera singer Maria Callas. Time Out calls the film "a loving and affectionate portrait of Callas that never airbrushes her foibles. And I have some good news for people who couldn't make it out this weekend.  We have found a way to hold all three current engagements for another week.  A REAL PAIN, CONCLAVE and BLITZ will stick around through early December.

Tickets for the first week of THESIX TRIPLE EIGHT (which starts Fri, Dec. 6) are now on sale! We're so excited about this engagement, and we're so pleased with all of the community enthusiasm in celebrating Charity Adams Earley.  On Friday, Dec. 6 at 7:15, we will be joined by Stanley and Judi Earley - the son & daughter of Charity (who is played by Kerry Washington in the film).

"Open Caption Mondays" are a hit and much appreciated by many of our regulars.  On Monday, Dec. 2, all screenings of MARIA, A REAL PAIN, CONCLAVE and BLITZ will be presented with Open Captions (aka - captions presented on the screen). 

Synopsis for MARIA:  Pablo Larraín, director JACKIE (with Natalie Portman as Jackie O'), brings his new film to life with the dazzling Angelina Jolie. "1977: Maria Callas, once the world's greatest opera diva, lives in seclusion in Paris with her staff and her two poodles. Her health is getting worse and worse. Then she receives a request to go on tour again. Will La Callas sing again? And if so, for whom?"

AN EVENING WITH STEVE BOGNAR - A NEON BENEFIT

On December 5, we're delighted to bring back our friend and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steve Bognar, who will present his recently remastered debut film PERSONAL BELONGINGS. Made over the course of eight years, Bognar's first feature "casts a wry, unflinching lens on his complicated father, Bela, a Hungarian émigré adjusting to life in the suburban midwestern United States. Bela participated in the 1956 Hungarian revolution, and the legacy of that struggle hangs heavy over him, his marriage, and his children. His announcement of a sudden return trip to his homeland sparks [Steve] to pick up a camera and document the journey—and ensuing fallout." (taken from Museum of Moving Image - where the film recently screened in a retrospective)  Following PERSONAL BELONGINGS, guests will be treated to a Q&A with Bognar as well as a bonus film chronicling the life of his late partner Julia Reichert.

FAMILY HOLIDAY FILM SERIES

We're delighted to bring back an annual tradition this year - a budget-friendly movie series for the entire family.  For the first three Saturdays in December at 11:00am, we'll host movies that are free for kids 12 and under and only $2 for anyone else.  On Dec. 7, we'll start with the Gene Wilder classic WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.  On Dec. 14, it's the animated treat HAPPY FEET, and on Dec. 21, we'll wrap up with the 1985 film SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE - with Dudley Moore and John Lithgow.

HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS (An Encore of Sorts)

Back in February, we were one of a handful of cinemas to host a special screening of the madcap film HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS (known as "The Great Lakes Tour")...and our audience had an incredible night!!  We've had many requests to bring it back...so we think now is the time for one more show.

ERNEST COLE: LOST & FOUND

SPECIAL SCREENING!  From Oscar-nominated filmmaker Raoul Peck (director of I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO).  "This new documentary chronicles the life and work of one of the first Black freelance photographers in South Africa, whose early pictures, shocking at the time of their first publication, revealed to the world Black life under apartheid. Cole fled South Africa in 1966 and lived in exile in the U.S., where he photographed extensively in New York City, as well as the American South, fascinated by the ways this country could be at times so vastly different, and at others eerily similar, to the segregated culture of his homeland. After his death, more than 60,000 of his 35mm film negatives were inexplicably discovered in a bank vault in Stockholm, Sweden. Most considered these forever lost.Telling his own story through his writings, the recollections of those closest to him, and the lens of his uncompromising work, the film is a reintroduction of a pivotal Black artist to a new generation."
