Hello Everyone!

I'm back from Toronto...where I saw 32 films and got a lot of great ideas!  One lovely surprise from TIFF is a big crowdpleaser - WILL & HARPER.  It's a roadtrip film in which Will Ferrell is going across the country with an old friend who has recently transitioned. In his attempt to understand his friend better, the two become even closer.  Standing at "100% Fresh" on rottentomatoes, this doc is truly what the world need right now. In addition to WILL & HARPER, we're opening a documentary this weekend about my favorite film production team of all-time - MERCHANT IVORY.  In film school, most of my fellow students were all about Quentin Tarantino...meanwhile, I was swooning over anything from Merchant Ivory.  This little doc is wonderful, and it will make you want to revisit their canon of great films!

If you still need to see SING SING or BETWEEN THE TEMPLES, Thursday will be your last chance.  THE CRITIC will stick around for another week.  LEE - the new film about war photographer Lee Miller starring Kate Winslet - opens Sept. 27...and tickets for opening weekend go on sale tomorrow (Sept. 19). "Open Caption Mondays" are back!  On Monday, Sept. 23, all screenings of THE CRITIC and WILL & HARPER will be presented with Open Captions (aka - captions presented on the screen).

Synopsis for MERCHANT IVORY: "Merchant Ivory is the longest running partnership in the history of cinema. As a film production entity, Merchant Ivory was founded in 1961 by producer Ismail Merchant (1936–2005) and director James Ivory (b. 1928). Merchant and Ivory were life and business partners from 1961 until Merchant's death in 2005. During their time together they made 43 films - including films like THE BOSTONIANS, THE EUROPEANS, HOWARDS END, A ROOM WITH A VIEW, REMAINS OF THE DAY, MR. AND MRS. BRIDGE, MAURICE and more."

OHIO-MADE HORROR TRILOGY STARTS SATURDAY

Based in Ashland, Ohio, Good Deed Entertainment is bringing 3 horror films to us on consecutive Saturday nights starting in late September - The FRESH HELL Trilogy.  Shows begin at 10:00, and tickets are regular price.  The first in the trilogy is THE EXORCISM OF ST. PATRICK will screen on Saturday, Sept. 21. The second in the trilogy - WOLVES AGAINST THE WORLD - will screen on Saturday, Sept. 28. The final movie of the trilogy - DEAD TEENAGERS - will screen on Saturday, Oct. 5. More details about each of the movies are available on our website.

PAUL MCCARTNEY & WINGS: ONE HAND CLAPPING

Two special screenings of this new documentary are on the books! Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 and Sunday, Sept. 29 at 5:15. Tickets are available now!"Directed by David Litchfield, this film captured a moment when Paul McCartney and Wings had found and defined their signature sound. Filmed over four days at Abbey Road Studios in August 1974, the film provides an insight into the inner workings of the band as they work and play together in the studio. Including performances of tracks from Wings masterpiece Band on the Run (released in 1973), intimate footage of the band hanging out in the studio, combined with audio interview snippets, the film also includes previously unreleased full footage of a solo acoustic performance by Paul called The Backyard Sessions." CULT MOVIE NIGHT: TRICK 'R TREAT

THE BEST OF THE BEST: JAZZ FROM DETROIT is a landmark — the first documentary film to explore the dynamic story of the city’s innovative and influential jazz musicians. Inspired by Mark Stryker’s award-winning 2019 book JAZZ FROM DETROIT, the feature-length film makes the case that you can’t tell the history of jazz without telling the history of jazz from Detroit...The film features legends like Elvin Jones, Yusef Lateef, and Ron Carter along with today’s stars like Karriem Riggins, Kenny Garrett, and Regina Carter, all worldclass jazz musicians who have rolled off Detroit’s assembly line. 
WYSO's Dave Barber will host a post screening talk session with writer and co-producer Mark Stryker, arts reporter and critic at the Detroit Free Press for 21 years.
