This Friday marks the start of the powerful and transformative film SING SING - starring Colman Domingo.  If you're part of the theatre community, if you're a part of law enforcement,  if you're in the mental health and wellness field, if you love good films, or if you just want to be in the know regarding this year's Oscar race, don't miss this film.  We're asking you to help spread the word about SING SING at THE NEON.  Please tell fellow movie lovers about this film playing on our big screen this weekend. We really don't want this one to disappear too quickly.

Very soon, we'll have details to announce regarding OUT HERE DAYTON FILM FEST - which just received an ArtRISE grant from Ohio Arts Council.  This will be our 19th year celebrating the best in LGBTQIA+ cinema from around the world, and the fest is set for Oct. 10-13.  Mark your calendars, passes will go on sale Sept. 6th. OUT HERE DAYTON FILM FEST is made possible in part by an investment of public funds from the Ohio Arts Council (OAC). The OAC is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally, and economically. “The Ohio Arts Council strives to support the arts in all communities and is dedicated to investing in historically underrepresented populations and groups.” (taken from OAC’s ArtRISE webpage) Special thanks to NEON board member Ann Schenking and NEON assistant manager Diana Cordero - both who helped me craft our application for this important grant.

"Open Caption Mondays" are back!  On Monday, Aug. 26 all screenings of SING SING, DIDI and MY PENGUIN FRIEND will be presented with Open Captions (aka - captions presented on the screen). 

Synopsis for SING SING: This award-winning film is sure to be a contender come Oscar season next year! "Divine G (Colman Domingo), imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theatre group with other incarcerated men. When a wary outsider joins the group, the men decide to stage their first original comedy, in this stirring true story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art, starring an unforgettable ensemble cast of formerly incarcerated actors." ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS

The Southwestern Ohio Hemophilia Foundation is bringing a  FREE screening to THE NEON tomorrow. "For the first time in history, a generation of people with hemophilia are living past age 50.  ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS explores the lives of the older generation of hemophilia. We follow blood brother, Wayne Cook’s journey as he travels around the country to reunite with fellow blood brothers and sisters in their respective towns, reflecting on lives lost, the joys of family and friends and sharing untold stories of how hemophilia has affected their personal lives today as they age. It’s an inspiring heartwarming story of a community’s legacy, and their longing to reunite and be there for each other, again."  Old Scratch Pizza will be served along with popcorn and a soda. Other refreshments will be available for purchase. Exhibition On Screen: CEZANNE

ENCORE ADDED ON SEPT 4! "Dedicated to the portrait work of Paul Cézanne, the exhibition opens in Paris before traveling to London and Washington.  One cannot appreciate 20th century art without understanding the significance and genius of Paul Cézanne. Filmed at the National Portrait Gallery in London, with additional interviews from experts and curators from MoMA in New York, National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, and Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps one of the least known and yet most important of all the Impressionists."Tickets are available now for $12.50.

GETTING IT BACK: THE STORY OF CYMANDE

"In the racially turbulent UK of the early 70s, a group of black musicians came together in South London with a common love of rhythms and a message of peace. Cymande – with the dove as their symbol – combined jazz, funk, soul and Caribbean grooves to form a unique sound. Despite success in the USA they faced indifference in their native Britain, becoming disillusioned and disbanding. But the music lived on, as new generations of artists imbibed and reworked their pioneering sounds in fresh ways. From Soul II Soul to De La Soul, MC Solaar to The Fugees, the Dove had spread Cymande's message far and wide, prompting their return after forty years. This is their story." PAUL MCCARTNEY & WINGS: ONE HAND CLAPPING

Two special screenings of this new documentary are on the books!  Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 and Sunday, Sept. 29 at 5:15. Tickets are available now! "Directed by David Litchfield, this film captured a moment when Paul McCartney and Wings had found and defined their signature sound. Filmed over four days at Abbey Road Studios in August 1974, the film provides an insight into the inner workings of the band as they work and play together in the studio. Including performances of tracks from Wings masterpiece Band on the Run (released in 1973), intimate footage of the band hanging out in the studio, combined with audio interview snippets, the film also includes previously unreleased full footage of a solo acoustic performance by Paul called The Backyard Sessions."

OHIO-MADE HORROR TRILOGY

Based in Ashland, Ohio, Good Deed Entertainment is bringing 3 horror films to us on consecutive Saturday nights starting in late September - The FRESH HELL Trilogy.  Shows begin at 10:00, and tickets are regular price.  The first in the trilogy is THE EXORCISM OF ST. PATRICK will screen on Saturday, Sept. 21. The second in the trilogy - WOLVES AGAINST THE WORLD - will screen on Saturday, Sept. 28. The final movie of the trilogy - DEAD TEENAGERS - will screen on Saturday, Oct. 5. More details about each of the movies are available on our website.
