Hello Everyone!

We've got a lot of ground to cover before OUT HERE DAYTON FILM FEST in a couple weeks.  If you still need to see THE ORIGIN OF EVIL or TWO TICKETS TO GREECE, you'll need to hurry - both of these films only play through Thursday.  On Thursday night, we'll open the restoration of the Jonathan Demme classic doc STOP MAKING SENSE. On Friday, we'll open one of my favorites from this year's TIFF - FLORA AND SON (from the director of ONCE and SING STREET) - which currently has an audience rating of "100% Fresh" on rottentomatoes!

The scholarship portal for OUT HERE DAYTON FILM FEST opens today.  We don't want ticket prices to deter anyone from attending the festival...so due to the assistance of our generous sponsors, people can apply for Free Tickets  to any screening at this year's festival.  Please help us spread the word, and be sure to read more about the festival by visiting the official site.  It's a great line-up!  (Read more about the festival below - it's our first announcement of a special guest!)

"Open Caption Mondays" continue to be well-received. On Monday, Oct. 2, FLORA AND SON and STOP MAKING SENSE will be presented with captions on the screen. (As a reminder, seating is no longer assigned on Mondays-Thursdays for traditional engagements.)

Synopsis for FLORA AND SON: "Single mom Flora is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son, Max. Her efforts to keep him out of trouble lead to a beat-up acoustic guitar, a washed-up LA musician, and harmony for this frayed Dublin family." (Bleecker Street) This crowd-pleaser was one of my favorites from TIFF this year.  See it on the big screen...I think you'll love it! Starring Eve Hewson (I was surprised to find out this is Bono's daughter), Orén Kinlan and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Synopsis for  STOP MAKING SENSE:  A24 has remastered this brilliant film - often regarded as one of the best concert films ever...and currently rated "100% Fresh" on RottenTomatoes. An early feature-length film by Jonathan Demme (who went on to direct SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and PHILADELPHIA), this is "Talking Heads at the height of their popularity, on tour for their 1983 album 'Speaking in Tongues.' The band takes the stage one by one and is joined by a cadre of guest musicians for a career-spanning and cinematic performance that features creative choreography and visuals." (A24)

If you're into underground, fringe or cult classic cinema, there's a new film series you're gonna want to check out - Cult Movie Mondays - and week #2 happens at The NEON on Monday, October 2nd at 7:30pm with the cult classic starring Jake Gyllenhaal - DONNIE DARKO.

Synopsis: After narrowly escaping a bizarre accident, a troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a man in a large rabbit suit who manipulates him to commit a series of crimes.

In addition to the film, they'll kick off the evening with a special preshow theater party including local shorts, special previews, trivia, and more. Everything starts with special programming at 7:30pm and the film starts promptly at 8:00pm with a run time of 1h 53m. Tickets are $11 in advance, $14 at the door, and $53 for a 6 pack of tickets in advance. Cult Movie Monday is proudly presented in partnership with The Local 937, a brand new sandwich café opening in St. Annes Hill this Fall and Toxic Brew Company in The Oregon District. OUT HERE DAYTON FILM FEST (formerly known as DAYTON LGBT FILM FEST) is set for Oct. 13-15!  The website for the fest is live, a limited number of festival passes remain, and single tickets for each show are now available! Visit the official site and check out all of this year's selections - it's a fantastic line-up!  On Sunday, Oct. 15 at 3:30, we'll feature the comedy JESS PLUS NONE - which was produced by Dayton native Heather Olt.  Both Heather and writer/director Mandy Fabian will be joining us at this year's festival.  Get your tickets soon - we're hoping for a full house!

Have you heard that we're bringing  TAYLOR SWIFT - THE ERAS TOUR to THE NEON? "The cultural phenomenon continues on the big screen! We're delighted to bring the new documentary KING COAL to THE NEON for a special, one-night event - hosted by local Academy Award-winning director Steve Bognar. Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 7:30 - tickets are $12.50 (on sale now). "A lyrical tapestry of a place and people, KING COAL meditates on the complex history and future of the coal industry, the communities it has shaped, and the myths it has created. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Elaine McMillion Sheldon reshapes the boundaries of documentary filmmaking in a spectacularly beautiful and deeply moving immersion into Central Appalachia where coal is not just a resource, but a way of life, imagining the ways a community can re-envision itself."

Two professors from UD's Department of English are bringing back "Slasher Night at The Neon" - October 26! This year they are showing two classic horror films, THE THING, starring Kurt Russell and directed by John Carpenter, and AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, directed by John Landis.  A $20 ticket covers both films. THE THING will be the first film at 7:30, and after a 10-15 minute intermission, they'll start AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON. After the success of last year's selections, we are expecting a bigger crowd...so get your tickets early!

3 Special Screenings are now on the books for "TRIANGLE PARK - a documentary based on the first-ever NFL Football game, written and directed by Allen Farst. The film, for the first time, will uncover the facts around this seminal game in over 100 years. One of 14 original professional teams, the Dayton Triangles, played on Sunday October 3rd, 1920. The game was played in front of 5,000 fans. Farst goes to the depths to connect family decedents of former players even finding never before seen football treasures while leaning on football greats such as Troy Aikman, Ben Roethlisberger, Eric Dickerson, Joe Buck, Cooper Kupp, Joe Theismann, Larry Fitzgerald, Cris Collinsworth, Tony Dungy and more to uncover this generational story. Narrated by record setting, four time Emmy Sports Winner, Michele Tafoya."
